Puppies are more fun than studying

My roommate’s dog, Buster, is visiting for the week because his parents are out of town! It’s so nice to come home and have a happy dog to play with. I chased him around the house and he’s pretty slow with his tiny little legs, but he loves to play. I wish he lived here all the time.

We had another physiology exam this week, and that was frustrating. I put a lot more effort into learning the material and knew it a lot better than the information for the first exam, and I did a little worse. I should have been really happy with my grade because it was a tough exam and I did well, but sometimes more effort doesn’t necessarily result in a higher grade. It’s difficult, but I know that I just need to study a bit earlier for the next exam.

We have a pretty easy week next week with just one exam, and our group projects are due by this Friday. We’re required to do 3 hours of community service with our groups and include a photo of us volunteering in our powerpoints. We have to be there by 6am, so I’m not looking forward to waking up at 4:30am. It should be fun though, and we’ll get to see the sunrise over the ocean! We’re also working on the project itself after we volunteer, which involves lots of arts and crafts. We’ll be working together at an apartment complex where a lot of classmates live and I’ve been wanting to check it out, so I’m looking forward to spending time with everyone.

The project is pretty cool, but it is also frustrating because I wanted to get ahead in my coursework before the weekend was over. Hopefully the project won’t take too long and I’ll get to study a bit more.

Other life events…

I’m going to be an aunt next year!!! I’m not sure if the baby will be born before spring break, so I might have to wait to visit home until after the spring semester is over. It feels like I’m missing out on a lot of things back home and I miss my friends and family. I wish I could be more a part of the baby’s life once it’s born, but I’ll just have to visit as much as I can between classes.

It’s starting to get cold here, and I’m not really prepared for the weather. I’ve never lived in a cold area before, so none of my clothes are warm enough. I have a snowboarding jacket and rainboots, but I’ll have to go shopping before it gets any colder.

I also had to take my car in this morning for several safety recalls, and I’m taking it in next weekend to fix a few more things. I’ve been meaning to get it fixed for a few months and finally have an ok time to get it done. It’s going to be a bit more expensive to fix than I’d like, but I don’t want to worry about my car breaking down.

I finally ordered a new Jansport backpack! I’ve had mine for 10 years or so and one of the handles is falling off. The lifetime warranty could take up to 4 weeks to process, so I had to buy a new one in the meantime. I’ll send in my broken one and then have two backpacks, but I’m fine with that. The new backpack has more pockets, which I definitely needed.

We also have a fruit fly infestation. We all keep the house pretty clean, so I’m not sure how it happened. We’ve had several traps out and they seem to be gone, and then it’s like they reproduce like crazy overnight and there’s another army of flies to kill. The other students in the neighborhood have that problem too. There’s a lot of crickets in our front yard, and some spiders and crickets end up inside. I’ve gotten a lot better at not getting freaked out by the crickets everywhere, but I’ve heard that they go away in the winter.

The semester is about halfway over and I’m not nervous anymore. Everyone is doing well, and despite some stressful moments, school is really fun. I love my classmates, and I’m excited to attend class and learn.
